Deep in the heart of Snowdonia, a decades-old gas pipeline needed a transformation. With 13km of high-performance PE pipe, Radius Systems stepped up to ensure thousands of homes and businesses had the energy they rely on safely and efficiently.
A Pipeline in Need of Urgent Change
The pipeline supplying gas from Tywyn to Derwenlas had served Wales & West Utilities’ customers for decades. But built in 1964, it no longer met modern safety standards. Its ageing steel construction faced risks from shifting land and environmental pressures—putting 13,500 homes, including 5,000 vulnerable customers, at risk.

The Solution
When it came to replacing 15.2km of critical pipeline, Wales & West Utilities and contractors A.HAK UK Ltd turned to Radius Systems—the pioneers of PE gas pipe technology in the UK. We supplied:
- 13km of SC100 180mm 7 Bar Orange SDR11 Pipe
- 11.6km in 100m Coils, 1.4km in 12m Sticks
- Full electrofusion fittings for seamless jointing
Radius’s industry-leading intermediate-pressure orange gas pipe has been the backbone of UK gas distribution for over 50 years, and this project was no exception.
Overcoming Logistical and Environmental Challenges
This wasn’t just any infrastructure project—it was one set in one of Britain’s most beautiful and protected areas:
Snowdonia National Park – A landscape of rugged mountains and delicate ecosystems.
UNESCO Dyfi Biosphere Reserve – An internationally recognised area of environmental importance.
22 Watercourses Crossed – Including 5 major rivers requiring careful planning.
With Tywyn being a popular tourist destination, pipe deliveries were scheduled early in the morning to minimise disruption to residents and holidaymakers. Careful planning ensured that nature, history, and local communities were all respected.
The Result – A Future-Proofed Gas Network
This project wasn’t just about laying pipe—it was about delivering a safe, reliable energy network for generations. With precision planning, expert logistics, and top-tier engineering, Radius Systems ensured
Seamless collaboration
Between manufacturers, contractors, and utilities.
On-time, efficient delivery
of all required pipe and fittings.
A safer, more resilient gas network
for Wales & West Utilities’ customers in the area.
